Lake Orta

Lake Orta, a jewel of the Piedmont region is just waiting to be discovered.

WHAT TO SEE:

Orta San Giulio, the pearl of the lake, with the picturesque Piazza Motta, (the water taxis depart from here to the Island of San Giulio). 
On the North side of the Piazza you will find the Broletto or Palazzo della Comunità della Riviera di San Giulio, of 1582. 
In front of Broletto is a road called "Motta", at the top you will find the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta. 
The island of San Giulio, is dominated by the old seminary building, built in 1844 on the ruins of the castle.  The seminary today houses a convent of Benedictine nuns of the secluded monastery Mater Ecclesiae.  Nearby on the island the beautiful Basilica of San Giulio, the most important Romanesque monument in the province of Novara. 
Behind the town, on the hill you will find the Sacro Monte (UNESCO World Heritage site), a devotional path, consisting of twenty frescoed chapels, complemented by terracotta statues illustrating the life of St. Francis of Assisi.

 

Pettenasco: Art Museum of wood turning, Parish Church of Saints Catherine and Audenzio , a relaxing walk along the lake offering panoramic views.

 

Pella: Located on the other side of the lake is the ideal place to enjoy an ice cream by the lake and also gives you a chance to visit the parish church of St. Philibert. 

 

Madonna del Sasso: You can visit the sanctuary of the Madonna del Sasso, which is built on a granite outcrop directly overlooking the lake , the Museum of  Stonemasons, which is dedicated to work from the white granite quarries.

 

Omegna: Parish Sant'Abrogio , the Forum run by the Foundation Art and Industry Museum, houses a permanent exhibition.  The town is also home to various cultural events.  On the outskirts you will find the Alessi outlet.

 

Quarna: A few miles from Omega, in this small town you can visit the Music Museum .

 

Vacciago: Museum of Contemporary Art by Antonio Calderara .

 

Ameno: Museum and exhibition space Tornielli curated by the association Asilo Bianco. Monte Mesma the Franciscan Monastery and the Tower of Buccione .

 

Legro: Country painted murals can be admired by artists
