Lake Orta

Lake Orta, a jewel of the Piedmont region is just waiting to be discovered.

What To see:

Orta San Giulio, the pearl of the lake, with the picturesque Piazza Motta, (the water taxis depart from here to the Island of San Giulio).

On the North side of the Piazza you will find the Broletto or Palazzo della Comunità della Riviera di San Giulio, of 1582.

In front of Broletto is a road called "Motta", at the top you will find the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta.

The island of San Giulio, is dominated by the old seminary building, built in 1844 on the ruins of the castle.  The seminary today houses a convent of Benedictine nuns of the secluded monastery Mater Ecclesiae.  Nearby on the island the beautiful Basilica of San Giulio, the most important Romanesque monument in the province of Novara.

Behind the town, on the hill you will find the Sacro Monte (UNESCO World Heritage site), a devotional path, consisting of twenty frescoed chapels, complemented by terracotta statues illustrating the life of St. Francis of Assisi
